Frequently Asked Questions

1. What is Carolina Village?

Carolina Village is a not-for-profit North Carolina corporation operating as a Continuing Care Retirement Community (CCRC).  It is governed by an unpaid Board of Directors.

2. What are the fees at Carolina Village?

Our revenues come from a one-time entrance fee and a monthly service charge, both of which are based on the size of the unit chosen. The monthly service charge includes the cost of one meal per day in our dining room plus utilities (except telephone) and routine maintenance. There is also a deposit for placement on our waiting list.

3. Can fees be raised?

The monthly service charge is subject to change based on operating costs.

4. What are the admission requirements?

Residents must be at least 62 years of age (if a couple, at least one must be 62), ambulatory, and capable of carrying out  activities of daily living. They should have financial resources that would normally enable them to pay fees with inflationary increases.  It is Village policy never to ask residents to leave due to inability to pay the monthly fee when financial difficulties beyond their control have been experienced.

5. What is the charge for health care?

Unlike fee-for-service CCRCs, we do not charge for care in our assisted living or skilled nursing units beyond your regular monthly maintenance fee plus the additional cost of extra meals, supplies and such treatments as physical therapy. Nor is there any limit to the amount of time one will be cared for.

6. Is the entrance fee refundable?

The entrance fee is not refundable in the event of death.  If you choose to move out after occupancy you would receive an entrance fee refund minus 10% for the first month of occupancy and 1% for each month thereafter.  Because the entrance fee is considered a prepayment of healthcare, the Internal Revenue Service has permitted 38% of the entrance fee to be an allowable medical deduction. We cannot guarantee future IRS rulings, of course.

7. How may I apply for residence at Carolina Village?

Currently the Village maintains a waiting list of over 500 families and depending on the size of the desired unit, the wait for admission can average from two or three years to as much as twelve years.    A non-refundable deposit of $1000 per household (to be credited to the entrance fee) will secure a place for you on our waiting list.
